Motorola Droid 2.0 Photos and Specs Leaked

It’s been almost a month since Motorola Droid was released by Verizon and now we’re already hearing news of Motorola Droid 2.0 aka Sholes Tablet.

Mobile Android, a Chinese website has posted the first live photos of Sholes Tablet (codename), which looks like an upgrade to Droid.

motorola-droid-20-sholes-tablet

Motorola Droid 2.0 features the same 550MHz OMAP TI 3430 CPU as of Droid. It is expected that Droid 2.0 aka Sholes Tablet will run on Android 2.0 or most probably at Android 2.1 like we saw it on the leaked photos of HTC Hero.

Other features include:

  • 3.7? touch screen (800 x 480 resolutio)
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • HDMI port
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • UMTS/HSPA
  • Xenon flash

Sholes Tablet won’t have a physical keyboard like that in Droid. It is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2010, when at the same time we’ll be seeing XPERIA X10 from Sony Ericsson.

How to Install a Custom ROM on HTC Hero

Just today I did a tutorial on how you can root your HTC Hero and install the latest Amon Ra Recovery Image.

Now if you’re looking for installing and loading a new custom ROM i.e MoDaCO 2.9 or later, on your HTC Hero, I’d recommend you carefully follow the tutorial below.

How to Install a Custom ROM on HTC Hero

Things You Should Know:

  1. I’m using an unlocked HTC Hero running on stock firmware 2.73.x.x and I rooted and installed a new recovery image using this tutorial.
  2. Create a Nandroid backup of your phone before proceeding. This is just a precaution you should take in case anything goes wrong.
  3. A wipe has to be done while loading a new ROM, so again, backup your phone i.e contacts, apps, settings, messages etc. [How to Backup SMS on Android]
  4. This method also works with Sprint Hero.

The Tutorial

Before you proceed, I hope you read the above lines I wrote and have rooted your phone using this tutorial: How to Root HTC Hero and Install RA Recovery Image.

1. Download any custom ROM that you want to install/load on your HTC Hero. Download MoDaCo 2.9 from here – My favourtite ROM!

**In case of Sprint Hero, make sure the ROM you’re downloading is compatible with your phone.

2. Rename the ROM you just downloaded as update.zip

3. Now plug in your Hero to the computer and from the notifications, mount the SD card.

4. Copy the ROM file (update.zip) to your SD card. DON’T copy it into any folder.

5. Unplug the phone and turn it off.

6. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery Mode by holding down Home and Power buttons to turn it on. Keep holding them until you see some text written in green.

7. In the Recovery Mode, select “Wipe” and then select Wipe data partition.

8. Once the wipe is completed, go to “Flash update image” and select Apply sdcard:update.zip

9. Confirm the installation and then sit back and watch while the ROM is being installed/loaded.

10. When completed, reboot the phone. Your new ROM should be up and running now!

Install Android 2.1 on HTC Hero

I just wrote about how you can get Android 2.0 on HTC Hero, and now here’s another post I’m sharing how you can grab Android 2.1 for HTC Hero!

This ROM is by behnaam, a developer at xda-developers and has ported Android 2.1 ROM to HTC Hero which you can load and try on your phone.

How to Install Android 2.1 on HTC Hero

  • Do a full Nandroid backup of your phone using custom recovery image.
  • Flash this new radio 63.18.55.06HU_6.35.07.25 (link).
  • Perform a wipe – This is important!
  • Download and install the new ROM.
  • Have fun!

How to Root HTC Hero and Install Amon Ra Recovery Image

always wanted to root my HTC Hero and install custom MoDaCo ROM on it as I had heard a lot about that ROM because it’s very fast, highly optimized and offers much more than the stock ROM on HTC Hero.

I followed various tutorials and articles on the Internet about rooting HTC Hero which is on stock firmware 2.73.x.x and decided to write my own step-by-step tutorial.

How to Root HTC Hero and Install RA Recovery Image

Please follow the steps very carefully and remember, I’m NOT responsible for any damage you do to your phone.

Things You Should Know:

  • I’m using an unlocked HTC Hero running on stock firmware 2.73.x.x and has never been rooted before, nor installed any other modifications on it.
  • You MUST have Android 1.5 Cupcake installed on your Hero or simply close this page and don’t proceed – Google is your friend then!
  • This procedure also works with Sprint Hero, though I haven’t confirmed it myself.
  • Make sure you have already created a backup of your microSD card on your computer.

The Tutorial

1.On your phone, go to Settings > Applications > check Unknown sources.

2. Go back (into Settings menu) >SD card & phone storage > press Unmount SD card.

3. Once your card is unmounted, now press Format SD card.

4. Now mount your phone on to the computer by plugging the phone into the compuer via USB, pull down the notification bar and click USB Conencted. Then click Mount.

5.Then, download the two files given below. That’s the Recovery Flasher app and the latest Amon Ra Recovery Image.

6. Now copy both these files to the root of your SD card. Means, don’t put them in any folder. Then unplug your phone from the computer.

7. Now use a file manager on your phone like ASTRO File Manager (get one from the Android Market) to go to your SD card.

8. Now open the file FlashRec.apk and install the application.

9. From the applications list, open Recovery Flasher, click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.

10. Once done, click on the empty box above Download Recovery Image button and type the following WITHOUT mistakes:
/sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.3.2.img

11. Then click on the Flash Custom RecoveryImage button and wait for it to finish.

12. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery Mode by holding down Home and Power buttons to turn it on. Keep holding them until you see some text written in green.

13. That’s it! If you see the screen (like shown below), it means you did everything fine!

Now if you want to install/load a new ROM in your Hero, follow this tutorial: How to Install a Custom ROM on HTC Hero

The image you see above is of RA-herov1.2.3. You should have a slightly different interface options with the new RA-herov1.3.2

You can also watch the video by Unlockr attached below. But remember, when the red box appears telling not to type what the video says, then you should follow STEP 10.

Get Android 2.0 on HTC Hero

Alot has been going on at HTC for the HTC Hero. They promised us with an Android 2.0 update soon, but still we haven’t heard anything from them since then.

And then, recently came up the leaked screenshots of someone running Android 2.1 on HTC Hero with Sense UI.

A developer at the xda-developers forums has ported Android 2.0 Eclair to HTC Hero which is an AOSP release. AOSP means no proprietary apps like HTC’s or Google’s in the OS.

I built this rom from sources.

AOSP-Eclair-2.0 (Beta1)

This is just the first beta version by the developer and claims no responsibility of any damage you do to your phone. The OS is fine and almost everything works.

Some known issues in AOSP-Eclair-2.0 are buggy camera, calendar app not funtional and bluetooth audio is also not working.

HTC Hero with Android 2.1 Leaked Screenshots

just now I wrote about HTC Hero running on Android 2.1 and here we have some screenshots of Android 2.1 with HTC Sense UI.

The interface is just like it should be with Sense, which means HTC would be soon releasing the Android 2.0 (or 2.1) firmware update for HTC Hero.

HTC Hero Running on Android 2.1?

htc-hero-whiteWe all know that HTC has promised Android 2.0 for HTC Hero but we just found something much more exciting and surprising.

Could this be really true that HTC Hero will run on Android 2.1? Several screenshots have been found of Android 2.1 running on Hero.

htc-hero-android-21-screenshot

It could be that Google might be releasing a minor update to Android 2.0 before the end of 2009 and have teased us with that in the screenshot above, but there is still no official word on this.

Backup SMS to Gmail on Android

android-logoThere are many applications available for Android devices in the Android Market, but not all are useful. One useful app that I found in the Market was SMS Backup.

SMS Backup is a free Android app that automatically backs up SMS messages from your Android phone to your Gmail account.

sms-backup-android

The usage is really simple. On your first start of the app, you will have to enter your Gmail account details and configure the app as per your liking (the default settings worked fine for me).

The first time you will have to press the Backup Now button and wait till all your SMS messages are up online and syned with your account. SMS messages will be stored in a separate, newly-created label – SMS. And they won’t conflict with your other emails in your Inbox. You can even mark the backed up messages on Gmail as read.

You need to have IMAP enabled in your Gmail preferences, which must be done through a computer. Now whenever you receive or you send a text message, this app will automatically transfer the text your Gmail account.

Download SMS Backup

You can download this app for free from the Android Market on your Android phone. Or get the direct link download from here.

Download Photoshop Mobile for Android

photoshop-mobile-logoAdobe released Photoshop Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch a few days back. And soon after that, Adobe also announced the availability of Photoshop Mobile for Android devices.

Unfortunately, Photoshop Mobile is only available for Android Market in the US. UK and the rest of the world is left out. But the world doesn’t end here. You can still install the app using the APK file.

Photoshop Mobile for Android Features

  • Crop, rotate, and color-correct with the touch of a finger.
  • Add soft focus or change to black & white with a click.
  • Go classic by adding a sepia tint.
  • Intuitive Photo Browser for viewing local and online images.

PS3 Friends on Android

android-logoFinally we’re seeing some useful Android app being released as more Android phones show up in the market. The latest app I like is PS3 Friends, that brings PSN friends to your Android phone.

PS3 Friends Android app is still in beta stage, but does as its download page tells in the Android Market. It shows your PSN friends and their last activity, like the last time they logged in their account.

PS3 Friends Android Screenshot

ps3-friends-android

PS3 Friends Android Features

This app has a very easy and simple interface. You can see it in the screenshot above. The app shows:

  • Your friend’s last sign in time
  • Achievements
  • PSN level
  • If your friends are online/offline

Unfortunately, PlayStation does not provide any API to enable chatting with your PSN friends from other devices other than the PS3 itself. I really hope they allow that soon.

Other than that, this app is a really cool one to check when your friends are up and playing. PS3 Friends is also compatible with Android 2.0 (Motorola Droid).

Seesmic Mobile App for Android

seesmic-logoSeesmic is already one of the hottest Twitter clients that has recently released for Windows. And they made it even bigger by announcing the two mobile apps for Seesmic.

Seesmic is now also available for Android devices and BlackBerry. These two mobile apps are free to download and use.

seesmic-android

Android really needed a Twitter client that was well worth using. Twidroid and Swift, the two current top Twitter clients are just not up to the mark. The interface for Seesmic for Android looks really impressive.

Now I have to play with this app more. Might do a full review of the app soon. And this app (Seesmic) is the first high-definition Twitter client app on Android. This is the reason why it is more visually appealing.

You can grab Seesmic on Android from the Android Market, and get the BlackBerry version by pointing your BlackBerry to Seesmic.

Sprint Hero Firmware 1.56.651.2 Update

htc-hero-whiteSprint has released the first over-the-air firmware update for HTC Hero. Sprint Hero Firmware 1.56.651.2 update is now available for download for Sprint users.

This update brings several issues that caused battery to drain out and fixes several other minor issues. You can initiate the update from the Settings > About Phone > System updates > Firmware update.

HTC Hero Software Enhancement SW 1.56.651.2 provides feature updates and enhancements to address the following:

  • Improvement to camera picture quality
  • DST (Daylight Savings Time) issue addressed
  • Unable to receive SMS due to full memory
  • Memory leak when Bluetooth is in connecting state
  • 3.5mm mono when not using headset with mic
  • Dialer application causing excess battery draw
  • Dedicated Mute/Speaker buttons have been added to the Talk screen

Fring for Android Now Available in Market

fring-droidFring, the popular mobile IM and VoIP application is now finally available for Android devices. Fring users can make free VoIP calls over Skype, MSN, Google Talk and via hundreds of SIP providers. Plus it also supports Yahoo and Twitter.

It took them quite long to bring Fring to the open-source mobile OS, Android, but they finally did after weeks of alpha testing.

Enough said. Rest you know what Fring is all about. Now get your Android phones and give it a try!

fring-android

How to Get Fring for Android

You have 2 simple options for getting Fring onto your Android device:

  1. Get it directly from the Android Market
  2. Get it from fring’s WAP site (m.fring.com)

Facebook 1.1 for Android

facebook for Android is one of the worst app Facebook has ever released for any of their devices. The Android version can barely do anything – But now, welcome the Facebook 1.1 for Android.

In my experience with Facebook 1.0 app on HTC Hero, all it could do is check your news feed and comment or like feed items there. Or most you can do is open anyone’s profile information.

In the recently launched Motorola Droid, that runs on Android 2.0, it has been found that it comes with the latest Facebook 1.1 and someone has been kind enough to extract the .APK out of the Droid for the rest if us to try it on our Android 1.5 devices (HTC Hero, Droid Eris, Dream, Magic etc)

It’s now more like the iPhone version, but still doesn’t have support for private messages in Facebook.

Download Facebook 1.1 for Android

You can download it from the link given here: Download Facebook 1.1 for Android

Clean ION 1.6 for HTC Hero v1.0

I have already shared a previous method on how to get Android 1.6 Donut on HTC Hero, but that was in raw files and were not fully compiled for a porper firmware update to Android 1.6.

Clean ION 1.6 is a fast and a clean ROM for HTC Hero 1.0 which provides better speed and optimized performance on your Hero.

The last firmware update it got was sometime in early September 2009, but now when Google has announced Android 2.0 and most of the upcoming devices are based on it, Hero users are expecting Android 1.6 Donut on HTC Hero update.

Clean ION 1.6 Features

  • Clean ION 1.6 ROM
  • Community kernel 2.6.27 by Lox (Many thanks!)
  • Root
  • WiFi
  • The extended APNs list – With most Operators
  • Speed & Performance

This ROM still has many features of Hero that aren’t supported in it i.e bluetooth, camera, accelerometer etc. But with future releases, they will be fixed.

You can download Clean ION 1.6 from here: Download Clean ION 1.6

Motorola Sholes Android 2.0 Ported to G1

just a couple of days ago I was talking about Android 2.0 being ported to G1/HTC Dream, but that was just videos and no developer had said anything about releasing the port from public.

barakinflorida from XDA-Developers forums as posted that he’s currently working on Motorola Sholes Android 2.0 port to G1.

He has already ported Android 2.0 from Motorola Sholes to G1, but the problem he’s facing is that the ported Android 2.0 is big for the size of G1. Once he gets over this problem, he’ll release the update file for Android 2.0 to run on G1.

The screenshot you see above is from G1 running on Android 2.0 ported from Motorola Sholes. But the big-sized UI is the problem barakinflorida is trying to fix

HTC Droid Eris Coming on November 6

so the rumours about HTC Droid Eris were really true, and it got more true after the leaked documents were posted by Engadget.

HTC Droid Eris is indeed coming on November 6, and will be the most affordable Android phone which is for only $99. It will be available in the US from less than a week.

HTC Droid Eris looks like a brother of Hero, which also has the same features as of Droid Eris. The bad part comes in when you see the price. Sprint is offering Hero for $179.99, whereas Big red will offer Droid Eris for almost half the price of Hero with the same features, and a bit less appealing to the eyes.

htc-droid-eris-verizon

HTC Droid Eris Features

  • 528MHz Qualcomm processor
  • 320 x 480 screen
  • 8GB microSD card
  • Android 1.5 Cupcake

Hero users will be getting an Android 2.0 update, while there is no word if Droid Eris will also get one.

Android Manager for Windows

More and more Android phone managers are popping up by developers, but there is still no word about any official Android manager from Google that will be compatible with all Android phones.

Android Manager is a an application for managing devices with Android OS. It will be complete solution for Android management with user friendly interface.

This application is still in development, but there is “First View” version already. In this version you can check out only the UI and what features the beta version will have.

Black Sense Theme for HTC Hero

Just a couple of hours ago, I shared how you can install/addd new themes to your HTC Hero without rooting your phone, running on with Sense UI.

While browsing through XDA-Developers, I found this cool theme called Black Sense which gives a complete black interface to your grey and black Sense UI. You can see its screenshots below.
